Autumn Durisdeer
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The work appears to be directly based on a watercolour painted during Gillies' first recorded trip to Durisdeer in rural Dumfries and Galloway in 1933 of the same view, although here the palette has been altered to more earthy colours.
His interest in the manipulation of visual planes which became heightened in many of his still lives is evident here, not least with the road at central foreground and the condensing of the visual depth of the overall composition.
