Sir James Caw
Sculptor: Schotz, Benno, RSA · 1891-1984
The bronze bust is one of two casts that Benno Schotz made of the original clay bust. One went to Sir James Caw himself and the other was deposited as Schotz's Diploma Work. The bust owned by Caw is now in the collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery (PG1570) having been bequeathed by him, and was the version of this bust included in the Benno Schotz Portrait Sculpture held in Glasgow Art Gallery & Museum, in 1978 (cat.12). It is reproduced as a thumbnail black and white plate on page 63 of 'The Concise Catalogue of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery" (1990). For the genesis of the bust and reference to the two casts that were made see "Bronze in my Blood, The Memoirs of Benno Schotz" (1981) pages 108 and 109.
