Portrait Bust of an Unidentified Woman
Artist: Schotz, Benno, RSA · 1891-1984
The bust depicts an unidentified young woman with shoulder length straight hair and a straight fringe, and with a slight smile upon her face.
The work was marked as "Joan, late 90s" on the delivery note. The date is wrong, and it is possible that the name "Joan" may have been allocated erroneously in confusion for Schotz's earlier (1934) bronze of Joan Boyd which has asimilar straight fringed hair style.
There are b&w photographs, sadly uncaptioned, in the Benno Schotz Studio Gift archive which feature the artist seated in his studio between two modelling stands, on one of which stands the present work, which appears to be that which he is modelling in his studio featured in a Glasgow Herald photograph reproduced as Plate XXXII of Schotz’s autobiography, Bronze in My Blood, G Wright, Edinburgh, 1981, although with the bust now cut off the tall support featured in the photograph.
