This painting is one of many harbour scenes that Ian Fleming produced throughout his career. The Diploma Work most probably depicts a harbour in the north - east of Scotland, possibly Arbroath harbour. The Diploma Work has been painted on a piece of board that was previously used for another painting, see reverse of Diploma Work which is painted in abstract impastoed red, grey and black paint.
