Study of R Macaulay Stevenson at St Luke's Dinner, Glasgow Art Club, 1946
Creator: Fleming, Ian, RSA · 1906-1994
pencil sketch on fragment of paper executed during the St Luke's Dinner at Glasgow Art Club in 1946, one of at least three portraits of fellow diners. St. Luke is the patron saint of artists (as well as bachelors, bookbinders, brewers, butchers, doctors, glass makers, glassworkers, gold workers, goldsmiths, lacemakers, lace workers, notaries, painters, physicians, sculptors, stained glass workers, and surgeons) and is traditionally represented accompanied by an (usually winged) ox or bull. His feast day is 18 October and was celebrated by an Annual dinner amongst Scottish artists organizations including in Edinburgh in the 19th Century (attended by many members of the RSA), and the Glasgow Art Club.
