Spanish Riverside Town
Artist: Fleming, Ian, RSA · 1906-1994
Fleming studied at Glasgow School of Art where he served a Post Graduate year under Charles Murray. He was awarded a post-diploma year Travelling Scholarship which took him to the Continent. He was away for a full year. He first went to London and spent three months there before moving to Paris where he visited galleries before moving South to Avignon, Arles, Les Baux and Carcassonne. He then travelled into Spain where he visited Madrid, Seville, Granada, Valencia, Barcelona, and ended up in Toledo.
The present work was produced as a result of his travels in Spain. The town has not been identified and may be a work partially imaginary, with elements that are suggestive of, but not typographically accurate for, Toledo.
