Landscape with Oak Trees
Artist: McCulloch, Horatio, RSA · 1805-1867
The distinctive gnarled trees and white cattle indicate the setting quite clearly as Cadzow Forest on the outskirts of Hamilton.
The area was a popular one for several Scottish painters including McCulloch who was born and raised in nearby Glasgow.
Similar studies of the trees in the park, remnants of an ancient Scottish oak forest, can be found in the work of Alexander Fraser the younger RSA. For example his "Cadzow Forest, Springtime" (Glasgow Resource Centre, acc.806) and "Cadzow Forest and White cattle" (Perth Art Gallery, acc. 2/63C) and "Cadzow Forest" (ditto, acc.1/63C).
Another who frequented the area was Sam Bough RSA.
McCulloch, Fraser and Bough were all close friends and it is not inconceivable that they may have ventured out together on painting expeditions to the Forest.
