McCulloch, Horatio, RSA

1805 – 1867

Received some early training in Glasgow as a pupil of the landscape painter John Knox and became friends with fellow pupil Daniel Macnee PPRSA. In the 1820's he worked as an asssistant to the engraver William Home Lizars in Edinburgh. After returning to Glasgow for a period he settled in Edinburgh in 1838. Having exhibited with the Glasgow Dilettanti Society, he then exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1829 until 1867. His work mainly consisted of romanticised views of Scottish landscape particularly the Highlands and he was influenced to a certain extent by the work of the Rev John Thomson of Duddingston. He became an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1834 and an Academician in 1838.
