the plate was commissioned from Forrest by RAPFAS for its 1861 subscribers' publication; 'Illustrated Songs of Robert Burns', an intact copy of which is in RSA Collections

McCulloch's Account Book (RSA Archives) records a payment for £100 for this painting on 1860-12-05, one of five paintings commissioned from McCulloch and four other artists by RAPFAS illustrative of 6 songs of Robert Burns (the 6th was engraved after an extant painting by Alexander Nasmyth) which were published in the 1861 RAPFAS subscribers' publication 'Illustrated Songs of Robert Burns.' McCulloch's original oil (11.0 x 91.4cm) was purchased in 1867 and passed by descent to Mrs Janet Rodger by whom it wa sbequeathed to Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow in 1901 (Acc No.1001).
