Alexander Lander Esq (1916-2000)

Artist: Schotz, Benno, RSA · 1891-1984

Portrait bust of a middle-aged man with swept back hair in a side-parting, clean shaven, with his left eyebrow raised and a smile on his lips, wearing a shirt and tie.

The identity of the sitter had not been established on receipt. The artist exhibited a bust of A Lander Esq at the RSA AX in 1978 (44) and on cataloguing the work this identity was proposed. On listing the contents of the Benno Schotz Studio Gift archive on 2020-10-16 RSA Documentation Officer Robin H Rodger confirmed the identity from a b&w photograph of the bronze of Lander exhibited at the RSA. The pose appears to be slightly different but the sitter with his raised eyebrow and smiling mouth is clearly one and the same as the subject of the present work.

The final bronze was further exhibited at the Benno Schotz Portrait Sculpture exhibition held in Kelvingrove Art Gallery in 1978 (cat 50, lent by Alexander Lander Esq). The catalogue gives the date of that bronze as 1976 and states that 2 copies were cast; “Mr Lander was born in Budapest in 1916, studied in Vienna and came to Glasgow in 1939. In 1945 he started his security systems business, which he has since continued to develop and expand.”
