Piazza Independanza
Artist: Trapnell, Matthew John · b. 1968
The artist, an Architecture graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, was in Italy in 1992 on an 1992 RSA John Kinross Travel Scholarship.
This is the Piazza Independanza in Siena, looking towards north towards the battlements and tower of the mediaeval Palzzo Ballati. The tall triple-arched loggia covered in scaffolding before this was built in 1887.
The Piazza is of 19th century creation; an ancient church which previously stood on the site being demolished to grant easier access to the theatre which is another feature of the piazza.
