Eternal Joy/ Child’s Play
Artist: Doumy, Melina · b. 1996
The painting was made after the artist returned from her Kinross Scholarship which took her to Florence between October and December 2018.
The artist classed herself as a painter but found that in Florence drawing assumed an unexpected primacy in her creativity, and she also turned her hand to sculpture for the first time. She enjoyed the whole experience of her first ever trip to Florence and drank in the many museums and galleries as well as the gardens.
The present painting is a work of the imagination and shows three standing figures around the edge of a circular dish on three short legs. To left a female nude throws a ball into the air, in centre a faceless naked male figure spouts water from a nozzle on the top of his head onto the figure to the right whilst simultaneously urinating into the dish. At right an amorphous man-animal creature with profiled head of a bald man on the striped and apparently hirsute body of an animal but standing on two legs as a human and pouring further liquid into the dish from its stained hands.
