Untitled

Artist: Doumy, Melina · b. 1996

The painting was made after the artist returned from her Kinross Scholarship which took her to Florence between October and December 2018.

The artist classed herself as a painter but found that in Florence drawing assumed an unexpected primacy in her creativity, and she also turned her hand to sculpture for the first time. She enjoyed the whole experience of her first ever trip to Florence and drank in the many museums and galleries as well as the gardens.

The present painting is a work of the imagination and shows an abstracted form which looks initially like a small bodied figure with a reptilian head and thick elephantine legs dressed in wide bloomers, but on closer examination appears to be a group of three amorphous figures, the reptilian headed one balancing on the shoulders of the other two whose faces resemble cloth face masks with cut-out eyes.
