Maquette (a) for the Beacon Centre wall piece
Sculptor: Rand, Keith John, RSA · 1956-2013
A maquette for part of a large wall mounted sculpture for a specialist Haematology and Oncology Centre (the Beacon Centre) at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton. The finished piece is installed on a curved wall linking the Reception to the Atrium. (vide I drive/ RSA Collections/ Keith Rand… for reference images showing the work in situ and a detail of same). The hospital is run by Taunton & Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, as a centre of excellence in the delivery of cancer treatments for the people of Somerset. It opened its doors to patients on 06.05.2009, and was the first major hospital build of its type in the UK for 15 years. It meant an end to a 150 mile round trip for treatment which the people of Somerset had previously had to endure, travelling to Bristol for their care. About 100 deaths a year were identified as a direct result of patients opting not to have treatment because of the added stresses caused by this long journey (vide; http://www.surecharity.org.uk/index.asp?pageid=416380, sourced 2015-12-08).
