Odstock Hospital was constructed in Britford parish (1.3 km) north of the village of Odstock near Salisbury in Wiltshire in 1942. It was used by the United States 5th Army Medical Corps to treat American troops who were stationed in the Salisbury area during World War II and provided support to the Normandy landings in 1944. Prior to the opening of the Salisbury District Hospital in 1991, Odstock accommodated a number of specialities including orthopaedics, ear nose and throat, obstetrics and gynaecology, and rehabilitation. The hospital was renowned from 1948 for its pioneering work in plastic surgery and the treatment of burns and (since 1984) spinal care for patients in five counties.
