Original Artwork for RSA Christmas Card, 1981

Artist: Balmer, Barbara C., RSA · 1929-2017

At some point in the late 1970’s the Academy consciously published an official Christmas card and for many years this was achieved by commissioning a member of the Academy to produce a design.
See artist’s file for two accompanying handwritten sheets by the artist; one instructions re proofs; Royal Scottish Academy Christmas card./ To b eprinted on white card./ Three colours line process – Colour/ rough enclosed for separations./ “Pantone” ink colours/ Lemon – No.393/ Red – No.172 [Brilliant Scarlet- added in different hand in black biro]/ Blue – No.281 [Reflex – added in different hand in black biro]/ Proof to be sent to -/ Barbara Balmer,/ 32, Broad Street,/ STAMFORD/ LINCS.

The other is a letter dated 1981-11-04 from the artist to Sir Robin Philipson PRSA, regarding the cards’ production and implying there had been problems with the registration but “it must be O.K. now!”

A blank copy of the card as published is in the Barbara Balmer artist file and a second copy, signed by the then president, Sir Robin Philipson PRSA is in the red Christmas Cards ring binder.
