At Longniddry
Artist: MacTaggart, William, Sir, PPRSA RSA · 1903-1981
Although undated the style of the painting would appear to date it to the late Nineteen Thirties when MacTaggart was sharing a studio with Sir William George Gillies RSA. The composition of "At Longniddry" is similar to Gillies painting "Landscape, Longniddry" dated to circa 1939 (G.1991.249). A similarly titled work "Longniddry, East Lothian" oil on masonite was exhibited in 1954 at The National Gallery of Canada in the exhibition "Some Edinburgh Painters", catalogue number 18. An identically titled painting "At Longniddry" was exhibited at the RSA in 1938 catalogue number 303 and unsold at the end of the exhibition and another identically titled work was exhibited at the RGI in 1942 catalogue number 143. These exhibited works may have been the same piece as the Diploma Work.
