Roses Against a Night Sky
Publisher: Harley Brothers LtdPrintmaker: MacTaggart, William, Sir, PPRSA RSA · 1903-1981
The view is taken from MacTaggart's sitting room window at his home at 4 Drummond Place, Edinburgh, looking across the square to the spire of Belle Vue Church, and relates to oil paintings of similar views by him.
Though dated 1957 MacTaggart was working on the stone by 7 January 1958 and worked slowly to complete it, so it must have been printed and editioned in 1958.
MacTaggart appeared to have had some previous experience of lithography. He had a keen appreciation of the technicalities and preferred working on coarser-grained stones.
The work is cited in Chris Allan's "Artists at Harleys" publication (2000) on pp.16-17 and recorded in the catalogue on p.32, no.69, and repro colour p.41 (a different proof)
One of a series of limited edition artist's prints published by Harley Brothers Ltd, a Commercial Lithographic Printers, in a pioneering experiment during the late 1950s and early 1960s
