Stag

Sculptor: Stevenson, William Grant, RSA · 1849-1919

A similarly titled piece was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1895 "Twenty point stag; statuette" catalogue number 1651. According to old index card from 'sculpture' box "Set of drawings by J Abercromby in Scottish Arts Club Archives, Vol I includes one of the artist with this piece, see photocopy (information from SNPG)"

"The Queen" periodical of 1894-02-10 carries a black and white photograph and a detailed description of an identical cast of a 20-point stag by William Grant Stevenson which had been given as a wedding present from the tenantry of the Glenquoich and Invergarry Estates in Inverness-shire to the Hon Miss Nellie Bass on the occasion of her marriage to James Evan Bruce Baillie of Dochfour. Standing 36 inches high, it was made by James Crichton & Co, Silversmiths, 47 George Street, Edinburgh, using 300 oz of silver from the Duke of Buccleuch's mines at Wanlockhead.

It was modelled on a 20-point stag, one of the largest killed in recent years, which the estate owner Lord Burton had shot the previous year at Glenquoich, a shoot at which the young couple were also present.
