Sketch of a viaduct

Artist: Hill, David Octavius, RSA · 1802-1870

The location is not identified, but is probably an early sketch of the Ballochmyle Viaduct over the River Ayr. Hill’s canvas of the scene, dated 1851, is in Glasgow Museums Collection (ref T.1967.28). The oil was exhibited at the 1851 RSA Annual Exhibition (cat 254) as The Great Viaduct on the Glasgow, Dumfries & Carlisle Railway - River Ayr - Braes of Ballochmyle, painted for John Miller Esq, Millfield. Hill would have been familiar with the area from his series of views to illustrate The Land of Burns, published in 2 volumes in 1840. Vide also 2009.025 for a related study of the bridge and 2009.014 for a sketch relating to Miller's estate of Millfield near Falkirk.Miller and Hill first met in connection with the Alexander Hill publication of Views on the Opening of the Glasgow and Garnkirk Railway, which Miller had designed, in 1832; illustrated by D O Hill.
