Landscape, Village with Steeple, Distant Hills
Primary artist: Hill, David Octavius, RSA · 1802-1870Printmaker: Forrest, William, HRSA · 1805-1889
Depicts a group camped on a hillside overlooking the village of Moffat, Dumfries and Galloway, and surrounding countryside. Much of the scenery for Sir Walter Scott's Old Mortality (1816) was derived from a visit Scott made in 1805 to the region around Moffat, Dumfriesshire, with James Skene of Rubislaw, Sir Adam Ferguson and James Hogg. Moffatdale provided refuge for many Covenanters during the 'Killing Times'.[https://www.europeana.eu/en/item/9200267/BibliographicResource_3000059120562 - sourced 2022-06-15]
