This sketch is on a loose piece of paper with no obvious relationship to a sketchbook.

The specific location of the sketch on the verso face has been identified as St Tropez in the South of France. St Tropez was first visited by Milne in 1919, with a work titled "St Tropez Var" exhibited a the RSA AX in 1926. He exhibited works titled Port of St Tropez in the RSA AX in 1950 and 1951.

The drawing appears to be a preparatory study for Milne's oil painting of this scene which was sold at Bonhams salerooms on 2012-04-19, lot 66.
