Milne, John Maclauchlan Milne, RSA

1885 – 1957

Son of the artist Joseph Milne. Spent a period in his youth as a cowboy in Canada and then travelled to Paris c.1921 where the art of Cezanne made a lasting impression upon him. From 1919 until 1932 Milne spent time in France annually often with Peploe and Cadell. He settled in Corrie on the Isle of Arran just before the Second World War. On 1946-08-08 he married Elizabeth Livingstone Mackellar the 44 year old daughter of James Duncan Mackellar, Professor of Music and his wife Leona Morton Tulloch at Corrie. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1912 until 1958. Milne was elected an Associate Member of the RSA in 1933 and a full Academician in 1938. He was also the Warden at Hospitalfield from 1956. A Centenary Exhibition was mounted by Dundee Art Gallery in 1985 with a modest publication accompanying. The first major biography of the artist "The Missing Colourist - the search for John Maclauchlan Milne" was written and self-published by Maurice Millar in 2022.
