The artist has explained in conversation with the Collections Assistant in May 2008 that the Diploma Work was inspired by a heavily pruned plane tree near his house in Dundee where he was living at the time and that the wall was painted in situ. There are also sensitive and complex layers of personal meaning invested in the painting.
