Wilkie was a great influence on many of the early members of the RSA and was elected an HRSA in 1832. His original oil painting appears to have been painted in 1806 according to the signature and date which is reproduced at bottom centre of the image

Moon, Boys and Graves published this print in 1828 as an etching and engraving, having been issued as an etching by Hurst, Robinson and Co. in 1826. (vide impressions of this latter issue in British Museum, acc no. 1842,0806.270, and of the earlier version, same collection acc no. 1839,0413.38)

The BM impression carries the following inscription; "Lettered below the image with the title in open letters around a crest with th emotto 'Virtutis Fortuna Comes', incorporated into a dedication from the publishers to the Duke of Wellington and 'Painted by D. Wilkie, R.A. / Engraved by James Mitchell. / Printed by McQueen / London, Published Sept. 1. 1828, by Moon, Boys & Graves, Printsellers to his Majesty, 6, Pall Mall'."
