Madonna of the Gondoliers

Artist: Hislop, Margaret Ross, RSA · 1895-1972

The artist exhibited Venetian views amongst her RSA AX exhibits between 1959 and 1968. The present work appears to depict a shrine to the Madonna, contained within an architectural housing with wrought iron doors, apparently built into the bank of an unidentified canal in Venice, the distinctive prows of two gondolas visible at foreground left. St Christopher the patron saint of travellers is also the patron saint of the Gondoliers of Venice and has a church dedicated to him with strong ties to the gondoliers. There is also a carved marble bas relief panel on the pier of one of the bridges in Venice, the Ponte della Paglia, which depicts the Madonna and is acknowledged by every passing gondolier but this is not the shrine depicted here.
