Tantallon Castle from Seacliff
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The imposing red sandstone ruins of Tantallon Castle with its curtain wall giving the false impression of it being larger and more secure than it really is, dominate the clifftops south of Dunbar of the East Lothian coast.
As such it is marginally closer to Gillies' boyhood home of Haddington, however the present work was probably painted following the family's move from there to 162 Willowbrae Road in Edinburgh's south-eastern suburbs in 1929.
The foreground setting of rocks enhances the castle's prominent position, and the curved forms of the rocks are mirrored in the sweeping shapes of the clouds above.
