Armour was a student in the RSA Life School every year from 1883-4 to 1887-8 inc.
In 1884 he was awarded a prize for being equal second best painting from the life (The Chalmers Prize) and shared the Keith Prize (for best work of a student in the annual exhibition) with Tom Scott. In 1885 he came first equal in the Chalmers Prize (sharing with J Denovan Adam). In 1886 he took the Chalmers prize and again shared the Keith Prize (with Robert Duddingston Herdman). In 1887 he took the Stuart Prize.
