Painted from the life at Balmoral in 1891, inscription on reverse "Study of the Queen/ from life. Painted in the Drawing Room, Balmoral Castle, November 1891 for the picture of the first baptism of a Royal Prince in Scotland/ since that of the brother of/ Charles 1st/ G. Ogilvy Reid/ RSA". The baptism was of Prince Maurice of Battenberg, grandson of Queen Victoria. The painting for which this is a study is in the Royal Collection and was exhibited at the RSA in 1893 catalogue number 230. A study for the finished painting incorporating all the figures is in the SNPG (PG1306)
