Reid, George Ogilvy, RSA

1851 – 1928

Commenced his artistic career as an engraver whilst studying at the Trustees Academy and attended the RSA Life School from 1875 for four years. His initial paintings tended to be in watercolour before he began to work largely in oil in the early 1880s. He is best known for his Historical Genre scenes particularly illustrating Jacobite incidents and costume pieces in the Orchardson - Pettie vein. He also produced some portraits and was commissioned in 1891 by Queen Victoria to paint the baptism of the Prince of Battenberg at Balmoral, studies for which are in the RSA Collection. Reid exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1872 until 1928. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1888 and an Academician in 1898.
