Object for a Quiet Place
Artist: Docherty, Michael, RSA · b. 1947
The first sculptor member ever elected President of the Royal Scottish Academy, William [Bill] Scott RSA died unexpectedly in March 2012 whilst in office and before any plans had been made to determine the nature of the Presidential Portrait which he wished nor to select the artist who would undertake this. The work is a souvenir or memory of RSA Past President Bill Scott. Michael Docherty was contacted by Scott's successor as RSA President, fellow sculptor, Arthur Watson (on behalf of Bill Scott’s widow Phyllis Scott) to create the work posthumously. The objects in the work were selected by Michael Docherty from his studio and the artist explained that all of them have a resonance with Bill Scott. Docherty stated that he found himself having imaginary conversations with Bill as he selected the objects and made the piece. A collection of sixteen A6 pages of drawings showing developing configurations of the piece were submitted by the artist with the work. See Acquisition file for images of objects associated with development of the work and notes.
