Docherty, Michael, RSA

b. 1947

Docherty is a painter and creator of artworks using found objects, born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art (1964–9) gaining an Andrew Grant Scholarship which allowed him to travel to France and Spain. Docherty gathers found objects, which he paints and which together chronicle his travels. His first solo show was in 1970 at Richard Demarco Gallery, Edinburgh. Over 50 years of practice, Docherty has exhibited nationally and internationally, accumulating numerous awards along the way; including the RSA William Gillies Award to facilitate travel to Northern Africa and another to Cuba. He proceeded to teach at his former College until his resignation in 2007 from when he moved to France. Docherty was elected ARSA in 1984 and RSA in 2005.
