One of five sketches done for a memorial picture 'The First Royal Baptism for 300 Years of a Royal Prince in Scotland, Balmoral Castle, October 31, 1891. The baptism was the first since that of Henry the brother of Charles Ist in 1591.The baptism was of Prince Maurice of Battenberg, brother of Prince Alexander of Battenberg. Commissioned by Queen Victoria. The painting for which this is a study is in the Royal Collection and was exhibited at the RSA in 1893 catalogue number 230. A study (purchased in 1936) for the finished painting incorporating all the figures is in the SNPG (PG1306).
