The Moorish Maiden's First Love

Artist: Gavin, Robert, RSA · 1826-1883

RSA Archives contains a letter from from Gavin to RSA dated 1879-03-17 where he asks for a copy of the Members rules to be sent to a Parisian address as "I might possibly paint my diploma picture there". This coupled with the Parisian canvas maker's stamp on the reverse of the painting suggests that the work was executed in Paris.

There is every likelihood that there exists a preparatory oil sketch or a second version of the work as the studio sale of Gavin's works held by Messrs Dowells at their rooms 18 George Street, Edinburgh on 9 February 1884 following his death records an oil titled "The Arab Maid's First Love" which sold for £44.2/-.
