Gavin, Robert, RSA

1827 – 1883

Studied at the Trustees Academy under Thomas Duncan and initially produced genre scenes of everyday Scottish life, scenes from Shakespeare and portraits. In 1865 he visited New Orleans and in circa 1874 he visited North Africa residing in Morocco until circa 1878. As a result of these trips, his work began to focus almost exclusively upon American and then Moorish subjects, particularly female subjects. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1846 until 1882, he became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1855 and an Academician in 1879.
