Reading the War News
Artist: Vallance, William Fleming, RSA · 1827-1904
An identically titled painting "Reading the War News" was exhibited by Vallance at the RSA in 1871, catalogue number 740 and was sold for £75, see Sales Book 1867 - 1872. The painting possibly refers to the first Boer War of 1881. The backdrop is possibly Leith harbour as this was a favourite setting for Vallance's marine pieces.
