Burial II

Artist: Fisher, Beth L, RSA · b. 1944

Part of the 'Letting Go' series of drawings, discussed by Beth Fisher in the catalogue for the exhibition 'Grisaille Legacy' (RSA 2010) "These drawings began by centering on the ageing marriage and physical evolution or disintegration of my husband and myself.......over the decade, Letting Go has been overtaken by the illnesses and deaths of both my parents (in 1999 and 2005). The processing of those critical losses and reconfigurations is reflected in the ongoing chronology of this series. Letting go now has a broader reference..." also in notes on p 29 'Burial II' Fisher makes the following comments "My mother's death (six years after father died) followed five years of mental illness, catatonic depression, 2 1/2 years of hospital, over 80 ECT treatments, a relentlessly experimental and fruitless drug regime, and no remission. From a vivid, creative 79 year-old, she just shrivelled away. She died at home with us there. My daughters and their partners carried her wicker coffin with Nick and me."
