Counterpoint: Sea Rocks and Shadows
Artist: Busby, John, RSA · 1928-2015
The artist has confirmed the inspiration behind the painting in notes that he made to accompany his Diploma Work when it was submitted 'I have long been fascinated by rock pools and the amazing richness of patterns, colours and/ forms they reveal. This painting is about the interplay of sea-smoothed rocks and shadows,/ and grew from a particular pool among the red sandstone shore at Tynningham near Dunbar.' A copy of these notes is in Buby's file) In the book 'Land Marks & Sea Wings' written by John Busby and published in 2005 by the Wildlife Art Gallery in Suffolk, he talks about his rock pool paintings on page 81 "The final paintings are done in the studio from my sketches and photo/ graphs. From their original moment of discovery beneath my feet, they take/ on a new meaning when looked at as vertical forms confronting you at eye/ level in an exhibition. I find the transformation fascinating..."
