Hallowe'en

Artist: MacGeorge, William Stewart, RSA · 1861-1931

An identically titled painting was exhibited at the RSA in 1893, catalogue number 75 and at the Salon de la Societe des Artistes Francais in 1895 catalogue number 1245, and thereafter at the Annual Exhibition of Paintings from the Paris Salons,1895, at the Continental Gallery, 157 New Bond Street, London (cat 48) this is possibly the painting referred to in the review of the 1911 RSA Annual Exhibition in The Scotsman, 23 May 1911 which refers to the Diploma Work "The artist painted this procession/ of children with turnip lanterns a/ good many years ago, but the work was/ accidentally destroyed." There is a painting entitled 'Halloween' by MacGeorge (oil on canvas, 32 x 54", undated) in the collection of East Lothian Council which bears similarity to the Diploma Work in terms of composition. An image of this painting is in MacGeorge's file.
