Brown and Grey Landscape, Pentland Hills

Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973

Tress are a feature to be found throughout Gillies' output, tackle din different ways at different stages in his development as an artist.

The view depicted here was painted from near the village of Howgate in Midlothian, looking west to the Pentland Hills. It was a favourite view which was to provide the inspiration for many of Gillies' works.

Gillies has all but abandoned spatial depth and this work is less an accurate delineation of a place, it is more a painting that creates a sense of time and place. His brushstrokes are loose and his palette is evocative in its muted greys and ochres of a winter landscape.
