Autumn, Durisdeer
Artist: Gillies, William George, Sir, CBE RA RSA PPRSW · 1898-1973
The work was probably painted on one of the trips Gillies undertook to Dumfries and Galloway in the company of John Maxwell RSA.
He is known to have visited the tiny rural village of Durisdeer in the summers of both 1933 and 1934 and the present work is dated 1933.
It appears to have served as the model for a subsequent oil painting (G.1991.261) where the palette has changed and the sky has become more animated.
