Summer Mirage
Artist: Evans, David Pugh, RSA · 1942-2020
The original inspiration for this painting was a series of drawings that Evans had made of a man sitting beneath a picture of a Spitfire in a Yorkshire pub. See letter from David Evans to RSA dated 2002-09-17. Copy of letter in hanging file "Articles on Painters" David Evans has confirmed the identity of the male figure in this painting as a local taxi driver friend of his. Again, see letter from David Evans dated 2002-09-17. Copy of letter in hanging file "Articles on Painters". David Evans exhibited a similar painting to the Diploma Work in terms of composition and imagery at the RSA in 1990, a piece entitled 'Veteran' which depicts a man seated in a chair beneath a painting/ photograph of a battleship in which part of a window shutter is reflected. The painting is reproduced as a black and white plate on page 13 of the catalogue.
