The Waterfoot, Carradale
Artist: Mitchell, John Campbell, RSA · 1862-1922
In a letter from the artist to W.D. McKay dated 1919-12-02, he explains that "The Waterfoot, Carradale" is a provisional work as "The long times of trial both/ mentally and physically through/ which I passed during this war....made it impossible for me to devote myself to the production of work of such/ a nature and importance/ as I should wish to/ represent me in the/ Diploma Collection..." letter is in Archive Box "20th Century Letters, Academy". A label on the reverse of the frame of the Diploma Work (now separate from the painting) suggests that it was exhibited at the Paisley Art Institute Exhibition and was priced at £18, no date is given but this must have been prior to December 1919 when it was submitted as Mitchell's temporary Diploma Work.
