Mitchell, John Campbell, RSA

1862 – 1922

John Campbell Mitchell initially worked in a firm of solicitors before deciding upon a career as an artist encouraged by William McTaggart who was a fellow native of Campbeltown. In 1884 he moved to Edinburgh and studied at the Trustees Academy under Hodder before a period spent in Paris in 1887 studying under Benjamin Constant. He then entered the RSA Life School winning a number of prizes including the Chalmers Jervise prize and in 1891 the Keith Prize. His landscapes tended to focus on the south - west of Scotland particularly Galloway. From 1904 he was based in Corstorphine and Lothian landscapes began to feature in his work. In later years he was associated with the new Edinburgh College of Art. He exhibited at the RSA Annual Exhibitions from 1886 until 1921. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1904 and a Royal Scottish Academician in 1919
