Doorway - Trevelez
Artist: Rae, Barbara, OBE RA RSA · b. 1943
Barbara Rae travelled to the Basque Country in 1990 and was inspired by the colours in the Sierra Nevada. This painting is one of a number of paintings inspired by Spain that Barbara Rae produced in 1992. The RSA also has in its collection a work entitled "Christmas - Ronda '92" that is similar in style to "Doorway - Trevelez". The artist has confirmed that the Diploma Work and related studies "were done as a/ result of a two month stay in/ the mountains of the Sierra Nevada in Spain. The region is/ known as the Alpuhamas. I stayed in a village called Capileira/ and travelled around this area/ making drawings." (See letter from the artist dated 2003-10-12 in hanging file "Articles on Painters") The artist made a number of studies of a ruined house near Trevelez for the Diploma Work. There are four slides of these (Hanging File "Non - Collection) and one colour photocopy from a sketchbook (Hanging file "Collections: Easel Paintings")
