Sun Burst

Artist: Shanks, Duncan F, RSA · b. 1937

The painting depicts part of the Clyde Valley at Crossfield where the artist resides and which forms the inspiration for much of his landscape work. The Diploma Work is part of a series of view over the Clyde Valley produced between 1989 and 1990, see letter from the artist to the RSA dated 2003-09-01 in hanging file "Articles on Painters" "I tend to work in series and my one man/ show at Kelvingrove for the Contemporary Art Season/ was made up of a group of oil paintings and large/ acrylics based on a view over the Clyde Valley....Sun Burst looks like one of the more/ autumnal of the group...whereas in "Straight Dykes" and/ "Morning Flight" the field is ploughed" There are postcards of three paintings from this series, "Green Field" "Morning Flight" and "Straight Dykes, Crossford" in Box File "Scottish Painters, S". The Sun Burst theme is one that Shanks continued with after the submission of his Diploma Work in 1991. In 1994 he had a one man show in Glasgow at Roger Billcliffe Fine Art where he exhibited a piece entitled 'Sun Burst' (acrylic on paper) this is reproduced as a colour plate on page 6 of the catalogue.
