Annie's Tryste

Faed takes a poem of the same name, penned by Professor William Edmonstone of Aytoun (1813 - 1865) as his source of inspiration.
The painting was admired in the contemporary press when it was first exhibited in the RSA Annual Exhibition in 1864, the quality of its finish being particularly admired, with at least one reviewer likening it to a miniature painting.
Others were more critcal of the treatment of Annie suggesting that she was too plump and healthy looking for a supposed consumptive, which the poem called for.
It is one of two known versions of this painting by which Faed became best known on account of its lengthy period hanging in the National Gallery of Scoltand, on loan from the Royal Scottish Academy. It was first hung there towards the end of 1864 and was still on display by at least 1901.
There is an almost identical version which is dated to circa 1864, oil on canvas on board 54 x 48 cm which was acquired by the Queensland Art Gallery in South Brisbane in Australia in 1937.
