Faed, John, RSA

1819 – 1902

John Faed began to paint miniatures as a young boy before embarking on formal training at the Trustees Academy in 1840 under Sir William Allan. For a while he continued to produce miniatures before concentrating increasingly on larger figure paintings. He was a member of the sketching club known as "The Smashers' Club" formed in 1848 alongside his brother Thomas Faed HRSA. In 1864 due to his exhibiting extensively at the Royal Academy, John Faed moved to London but by 1880 he decided to move back to Gatehouse - of - Fleet. He exhibited at the RSA from1841 until 1895. He became an Associate Member of the RSA in 1847 and an Academician in 1851. John Faed's younger brother James Faed (1821 - 1911) was also an artist and engraver as was his sister Miss Susan Bell Faed (1827 - 1909).
