Artist: Giles, James, RSA · 1801-1870
The artist appears to have worked on his Diploma Work for some time, see various letters sent to the RSA at the end of 1831 where he asks for more time to complete the painting, especially a letter dated 1831-10-16 where he says "as soon as I possibly can, they/ shall have the picture which I/ have been arranging for the last/ two years." (letters in archive box "19th C Artists' Letters F - H") The picture was exhibited at the RSA in 1831 in an exhibition of works by William Etty and RSA Diploma Works catalogue number 20.
