Expanded Elm Seat (a.k.a. Slated Elm Seat)
Sculptor: Rand, Keith John, RSA · 1956-2013
An early furniture piece from the early years of Keith’s time in Scotland at the Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Lumsden. The making of furniture, chiefly seats, remained an interest throughout Keith’s career and he held several exhibitions featuring these pieces exclusively.
Other than the securing wedges this piece is incredibly made from a single plank of wood. The joint was one Keith developed, whereby two parallel cuts are made to create three tines, two of which are bent one way and the third in the opposite direction.
